Water Meadows Survey, Staffs Earthworks Survey

This 60-hectare site was surveyed by Minerva Heritage using state-of-the-art GPS equipment. Illustrations presenting the position, heights and direction of water meadow earthworks were created using a variety of software.

Helmshore, Lancashire Historic Building Recording

This historic barn building was recorded archaeologically, using an appropriate range of techniques. A historic map regression and a search of the available census data provided a historic context to the building’s development.

Glasson Dock, Lancashire Desk-based Assessment, Walkover Survey and Watching Brief

A survey of the archaeological resource at Glasson Dock was presented in order to assess potential impacts on sites and features present. Original plans and documents at Lancaster Maritime Museum were consulted, sites were identified and assessed, and a watching brief ensured compliance with Scheduled Monument Consent.

 

 

 

 

 

Odeon Cinema February 2010

We undertook the historic building recording survey of Lancaster's former Odeon Cinema. An archaeological watching brief followed during the construction works. The finds, including fragments of clay tobacco pipe and eighteenth century cooking pots, will be deposited at the Lancaster City Museum.

Open Access Archaeology Store, Lancaster January 2010

We carried out a Feasibility Study for Lancashire County Museums Service. This involved environmental analysis and public consultation to inform an options analysis exercise. A 10-year Forward Plan, Documentation Strategy and a Partnership Strategy were also produced.

Halton, Lancashire Photographic Survey

A Medium Format photographic record of this Grade II*-Listed Building was produced in advance of some alteration works. Historic graffiti provided a probable date for the construction of the barn, and an examination of the building’s fabric and layout provided some indication of the development of the history and development of the building.

Red Scar, Preston Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

A documentary research programme assessed the archaeological resource which was then tested against a Walkover Survey. The remains of a Victorian gentleman’s observatory were identified within the grounds of the old Red Scar House, in addition to a range of relict field boundary features and former mines or quarries. An Impact Assessment was provided for the proposed development.

Ward Hall Farm, Lancashire Archaeological Watching Brief

Redevelopment of a historic farm involved monitoring of groundworks. A ditch feature, a large pond representing a disused quarry, and the remains of a possible floor surface relating to the cottage known to have been associated with the farm were identified. A large quantity of pottery was recovered; some was medieval, and the site engineer recovered a spindle-whorl.

Ulverston, Cumbria Archaeological Watching Brief

A small householder development was monitored for the presence of human remains, due to its proximity to the medieval church. Disturbed agricultural soils were observed across the site, and a quantity of pottery was recovered. No significant archaeology was observed, however.

Beetham, Cumbria Archaeological Watching Brief

A small householder development was monitored for the presence of human remains, reported as being present by nineteenth-century writers. A very small quantity of disarticulated human remains were recovered, a section of a ditch was recorded and a piece of medieval cooking-pot was recovered from the ditch.

St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

A documentary research programme assessed the archaeological resource which was tested against a Walkover Survey. Examination of historic maps revealed that although the site had once been part of a middle class suburb, archaeological remains were disturbed extensively by the construction of the hospital buildings in the twentieth century.

Blackburn Market, Lancashire Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

An assessment of the archaeological resource within the route of a proposed city centre redevelopment was presented in order to inform the development. A variety of archaeological sites was identified including public houses, industrial premises, Dissenter’s Chapels and shops. A historic narrative of the study area and an impact assessment for the resource were presented in the report.

An assessment of the archaeological resource within the route of a proposed road corridor was presented in order to inform the development. A variety of archaeological sites were identified including mills, public houses, farms and industrial premises. A historic narrative for the study area and an impact assessment for the resource were presented.

Gorse Street to Whitekirk, Lancashire Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

An assessment of the archaeological resource within the route of a proposed road corridor was presented in order to inform the development. A variety of archaeological sites was identified including mills, public houses, farms and boatyards. A historic narrative for the study area and an impact assessment for the resource were presented.

Flookburgh, Cumbria Archaeological Watching Brief

Archaeological monitoring of intrusive groundworks took place in the historic centre of the village of Flookburgh. A rapid desk-based assessment provided an appropriate historic context for the work, although nothing of significance was identified.

Longsleddale, Lake District Desk-based Assessment, Walkover Survey and Historic Building Recording

The site of a possible medieval mill building was investigated through reference to medieval documents and subsequent records. The area was surveyed for associated features and the ruined remains of the building were carefully recorded using a range of archaeological techniques.

Ribchester, Lancashire Archaeological Watching Brief

Intrusive groundworks during the first phase of a small householder development, located close to the Scheduled Ancient Monument of Ribchester Roman Fort, were monitored.Relict agricultural soils were observed and a small quantity of ceramic material recovered, although nothing of significance was identified.

Gisburn, Lancashire Historic Building Fabric Assessment

The fabric of a fireplace and chimney within a Grade II-Listed Building in Gisburn were examined to assess whether these features or their components were part of the original building construction. A statement was provided to the local planning authority regarding the likely date and character of these features on behalf of the client.

Edenfield, Ramsbottom Desk-based Assessment, Historic Building Recording and Archaeological Watching Brief

This sixteenth century cruck-framed barn was recorded archaeologically and tree-rings of the principal timbers analysed to provide a date of c 1540 AD. A desk-based assessment provided historic context to the development of the farm and the barn.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire Photographic Survey

Archaeological monitoring took place during intrusive groundworks. The majority of the site had been heavily disturbed during the nineteenth century although it was possible to identify that the site had been used as a domestic tip in the late eighteenth century.

Alrewas, Staffordshire Earthwork Survey

Using GPS equipment and digital illustration software we were able to record and illustrate a group of water meadows and other earthwork features on the River Trent at Alrewas, Staffordshire. Minerva Heritage carried out the survey and produced the illustrations for this project.

Garstang, Lancashire Strip and Record

The development of a former garage site was stripped to the level of natural geology, and archaeological features were recorded and investigated. Although some evidence for post-medieval activity was recorded, the majority of this comprised stray ceramic finds.

Wellington Inn, Blackburn Historic Building Recording

The early 19th century Wellington Inn was recorded using Medium Format photography and measured survey prior to demolition. A historic context was provided for the building using maps and other available documents.

53-55 Furthergate, Blackburn Historic Building Recording

The early 19th century shop premises on Furthergate were recorded using photography and measured survey. A historic context for the building was provided by examining historic maps and other documents.

Furthergate, Blackburn Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

A documentary research programme assessed the archaeological resource which was tested against a Walkover Survey. Resources within the study area were catalogued as a Gazetteer, statements of significance were produced for all of the resources and an impact assessment was also carried out. A brewery, public houses, workers housing, mills, schools and turnpike routes were identified.

Wennington, Lancashire Historic Building Recording

An historic Grade II-Listed barn building was recorded, using Medium Format photography and illustrations. The historic context of the building was also investigated using map evidence and a variety of other sources.

Lakeland Museums Education Network (LMEN) Website Development

Hosting and design of a web portal was arranged for the group, and website management training provided for staff members.

Washington, Sunderland Archaeological Evaluation

Several trenches were excavated to examine the nature of some geophysical anomaly features. A limited quantity of pottery, now deposited with Tyne-and-Wear Museums, was recovered from late ridge-and-furrow features.

High Harrington, Cumbria Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

A proposed householder development was assessed for its archaeological potential, which was then tested against the results of a site walkover. Using historic maps and trades directory information a sand quarry was identified as having formerly occupied the site.

Deserted Medieval Village, Lancashire Watching Brief

The conditions of Scheduled Monument Consent required monitoring of a small development by an archaeologist. Although the development site was located over the site of a Deserted Medieval Village, nothing of any archaeological significance was observed.

A barn building was investigated and recorded using historic research and archaeological recording techniques. A variety of historic documents were examined in order to provide supporting information to explain the development of the site.

Ward Hall Farm, Lancashire Historic Building Recording

A group of farm buildings were investigated and recorded using historic research and archaeological recording techniques. The farmhouse, its associated barn and shippon were thought to have developed from the site of Ward Hall, recorded on Yates’ map of 1786. There was no evidence identified to support this during the building recording.

Lake District National Park Visitor Centre, Brockhole Desk-based Assessment and Walkover Survey

A documentary research programme assessed the archaeological resource which was tested against a Walkover Survey. Archaeological resources within the study area were catalogued in a Gazetteer and statements of significance were produced for all of the resources during the work.

Baycliff Farm, Cumbria Desk-based Assessment and Archaeological Evaluation

The development of the farm and its historic context were examined through a thorough search of documents, and a series of targeted evaluation trenches were excavated. The footprint of a former farm building was revealed.
