Heritage Gateway has been developed by English Heritage in collaboration with the Association for Local Government Officers (ALGAO) and the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) to provide access to heritage information resources

OpenOffice is a freeware alternative with cross-platform functionality, also compatible with 'Microsoft Office' file formats

PDF Forge is a freeware program that allows you to create and combine PDF documents from a host of other programs

The Council for British Archaeology (CBA) is an educational charity working throughout the UK to involve people in archaeology and to promote the appreciation and care of the historic environment for the benefit of present and future generations

The Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) is a voluntary scheme to record archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales

Lakeland Museums' Education Network (LMEN) is a cross-curricular platform providing education resources across South Lakeland

Renaissance North West is the strategic regional body working with and for the museums, archives and libraries sector in promoting best practice and sustainable collaboration.

Local Archaeology and History Groups

Chester Society for Landscape History aims to promote the study of landscape history, and to provide lectures and site visits.

Lancashire Archaeological Society exists to encourage and promote interest in archaeology and history, particularly that of Lancashire. There is a yearly programme of 5 evening talks, plus a members' evening, and visits to sites of interest

Lancaster Archaeological and Historical Societyholds lectures in winter and organises field trips in summer to sites of archaeological and historical interest

Wigan Archaeological Society provides monthly lectures and discussions, as well as undertaking its own research and fieldwork projects (including excavations)

Wirral and North Wales Field Archaeology organises research, fieldwork, classes, lectures, field trips and activities in the Flintshire and Wirral area
